Cyber Security For Your Blog

We hear so much about websicyber securitytes getting hacked and personal information getting stolen.  Many people think they don’t have to worry about cyber security when it comes to their blog. They don’t sell products on it so why worry right? Wrong. Cyber criminals and hackers attack blogs for different reasons and can even turn it against you. Here are some ways to make your blog safe from online threats.

Plugins – Most likely you use plugins or scripts on your blog so that it is more appealing to readers. You may even have a security plugin on your blog already, but even that protection may not be enough. Make sure you update your plugins as often as possible. Get rid of plugins that don’t update themselves. Consider using more than one security plugin and check to be sure what vulnerabilities or threats are fended off by them. Are there any gaps that can be filled by another tool?

Virtual Private Network – Public networks are some of the most dangerous places online. Anytime you are working on your blog, be sure to use a Virtual Private Network (VPN). A VPN is a service that connects your devices to an offsite secure server using an encrypted connection. Your IP address will be hidden and you will be much more difficult to track. Using a VPN allows you to work safely from anywhere.

HTTPS – This is purchasing an SSL certificate for your blog. This is one of the more costly, but necessary steps you can take to protect your blog. It adds an extra layer of protection to communications involving your website and makes it harder for hackers to peek into what is going on.

Secure Copy – No matter what you do, something will eventually happen to your blog that affects it negatively. While you make every effort to prevent this, you may need a contingency plan. You never know if you will need to wipe everything and restore your blog from scratch. This is why you should make sure everything you do is on backup with either external storage or cloud storage. Whatever you choose, be sure it is a quality product and remember to do it regularly.

Clear lines of organization and separation – When you are managing your blog, you want to know where everything is and organize it in a way that it will be noticeable to you if something should get changed or go missing.  It is a great way to stay on the lookout for hackers. Separate it from your personal devices and accounts as much as possible.

Protect yourself from Malware – Get a security suite for any device that you use. Maleware can even infect smartphones and even Apple products. Take the same precautions on your mobile device as you do on computers. Avoid questionable websites or links the best you can.
